The Polgoon Kitchen

We enjoyed a recent visit to Polgoon Vineyard & Orchard for the opening of their kitchen and a wine tasting evening.

Award-winning vineyard Polgoon invited the Kingdom & Sparrow team to celebrate the opening of their new kitchen, with a wine tasting event on the 17th June. They were impeccable hosts, providing the guests with a promising selection of Cornish fare, all expertly paired with their delicious range of wines.

Polgoon is a family business who had their first harvest in 2006, winning the Trophy for “Best Still Rose in the UK”.  They have recently been awarded Gold in Wine of the Year by the UK Vineyards Association for their Bacchus 2014.  The introduction of their orchard, to the vineyard, has seen the business adapt and flourish. 


As well as a collection of red, white, rose and sparkling wines, Polgoon have an extensive juice and cider range, all of which have seen a rebrand this year.  The vineyard also hosts a shop and deli, stocked with local Cornish products.

We began the evening with a guided tour of the orchard and vineyard by winemaker John Coulson, who explained how the grapes are grown and harvested.  We got to see how they transform from flowers to grapes and how they keep the sprawling vines in check.


Afterwards we sat outside in their candle-lit courtyard listening to live local music and nibbled on juicy olives and Popti crackers.  The tasting began with John introducing each wine and inviting guests to jot down their tasting notes and score based on personal preference.

Each course was generous and beautifully presented.  Celebrating local produce with crab sandwiches, Cornish Charcuterie meats and a Cornish cheese board.


We finished with clotted cream and strawberries accompanied by the sparkling raspberry Aval Cider.

Their new kitchen is open Thurs – Sat, serving light lunches, deli platters and delicious crab sandwiches. It’s a beautiful setting with great food, exquisite wine and brilliant hosts.
